Mexico's ruling Morena party and its coalition partners have secured a significant majority in the lower house of Congress, but not in the Senate, as announced by the party's president on Sunday.
They fell just shy of the two-thirds majority required in both chambers to amend the constitution.
Initial results from the election earlier this month, which saw Claudia Sheinbaum elected as Mexico's first female president by a wide margin, indicated that her party, Morena, and its coalition partners came close to but ultimately fell short of the two-thirds majority, Reuters reports.
In a social media post, Morena President Mario Delgado revealed that Morena's coalition, which comprises the Green Party and the Labor Party, will hold 83 seats in the 128-seat Senate, falling just short of the 85-seat super-majority threshold.
Delgado added that in the 500-member lower house of Congress, the ruling leftist coalition will possess 372 seats, surpassing the 334-seat super-majority threshold.
“With a super-majority in the lower house and a majority in the Senate, we will deepen the transformation to keep building a country with well-being and shared prosperity,” Delgado stated.
Mexico's electoral authority, the INE, had announced plans to recount 60% of the votes. Xochitl Galvez, the Mexican opposition leader who was defeated by Sheinbaum in the election by a margin of approximately 30 percentage points, had advocated for a recount of 80% of the ballot boxes.
Furthermore, the uncertainty surrounding the composition of the upcoming Congress, set to commence in September, unsettled markets last week. This was exacerbated by both outgoing leftist President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and President-elect Sheinbaum indicating their support for far-reaching reforms to the constitution.
The proposed reforms entail abolishing independent energy regulators and centralising power within the executive branch. Additionally, there's a plan for an overhaul of the judiciary, which would involve the election of Supreme Court judges by the public.
